"What a gentleman as my special guest "dining companion" when I was doing restaurant reviews, and he was one of the few people allowed to call me Jeannie. I'll remember him as warm and caring and fun to be around. Dave and I will miss you, my ambidextrous friend."

"Well, as many as you know, Lutetia  is my very first sail boat. When purchased, I was in the throes of battling my rare auto immune disease and incredibly weak. So, working the sheets was not in the cards for me - leaving me on the helm. Terrorized after my first sail, I called the Michigan city yacht club for help to see if anyone would be willing to teach me how to sail on our boat. Vic accepted the challenge and took me out many times that summer to teach me to sail. On one early adventure, the jib got caught and I was left alone at the helm while Vic and Bob went to free the jib.  A gust wind combined with my incredible inexperience overpowered the boat and sent us into a spin.  When everything calmed down and they returned to the cockpit, I was pretty shaken up. I apologized profusely - Vic just started laughing and told me that it was gonna take a lot more than the likes of me to toss him off a boat.   Very true.  He will be missed. "

"Vik and I didn’t sail together often but we spent hours talking about boats, racecars, & motorcycles.  One late night on the dock after everyone had drifted elsewhere, Vik and I were talking sailboat racing, and he told me that I reminded him of himself as he was getting started in racing…basically, and I don’t remember the British terms he used, he said he appreciated my combination of luck, enthusiasm, and solid guesswork.

I didn’t read much into it but figured there was a compliment in there somewhere, and that conversation often comes up when I’m guessing at what to do next."

"Vik was the first person I met at a Cruiser Class event. I was new to town and looking to crew and he invited me to sail with him and Lew on Cantankerous. I sailed with them for 3 years and learned so much. I’ll always remember that, even back then, at 74, Vik was the first one to go up the mast to fix something. I took note and will forever want to be like that, full of energy, and ideas, ready to jump in, and never willing to back down from what he held dear or felt was important. RIP Victory Warren. You’ve ended up leaving behind an army of friends. A testament to a life well lived. A sailing hero of mine for sure. Incidentally, he also addicted me to Formula 1. I'll always blame that on him. Fair winds and following seas, Mate!"

"Vik and I were delivering Restless from St Joe to MCY and trying to do more sailing than motoring in the flukey winds.  We’re on a sailboat, so not going fast, right?  And we’re on my boat, which means going even less fast, but we’re having a nice time.

Vik normally had a solid handle on physics, but about halfway, Vik sees our ETA on the GPS, and I’ll never forget the hurt look on his face when he half-shouts at me, “I can’t get in that late…I’m babysitting the grandkids at 5:30!” as though I had some secret method of teleporting us the last 15 miles, like a hidden flux capacitor or whatever."
